Judge Kathleen Lang was appointed LaPorte County Superior Court No. 1 Judge September 2005. Her caseload includes major felony criminal cases, family law, civil litigation, estates, guardianships and mental health cases.
Prior to this appointment, she served our county as a Magistrate, as a Probate Commissioner and as an Administrative Hearing Judge.
As LaPorte County Circuit Court Magistrate, she was instrumental in developing several at-risk youth programs, such as Project ED & Day Reporting.
She has the legal experience…
Judge Lang’s legal experience includes 17 years as a prosecutor in both Indiana and Illinois, extensive jury and bench trial experience, and a broad range of appellate work, including cases in the state appellate court, state Supreme Court and in the United States Supreme Court.
In addition, she has been an Adjunct Professor at the Valparaiso University School of Law; a Faculty member for the Indiana Judicial Conference and the National Institute of Trial Advocacy; and a trial skills instructor at Emory Law School and the National Justice Center at the University of South Carolina School of Law. She has also been a guest lecturer for the Chicago Bar Association, and Purdue and Indiana State Universities.

During law school she served as a Program Director of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, in charge of major fund raising programs for children’s cancer research hospital.
After college, Judge Lang was a music teacher at Longwood Academy High School on the South Side of Chicago. She was Director of the band, three choirs and a 100-voice gospel chorus. In addition, she was a music teacher at Chicago Vocational High School, in a federally funded summer music program for high school students.

Judge Lang has received numerous honors recognizing her commitment to law, education, integrity and community. These include the Clifford Arnold Award for Public Service; the LaPorte Chamber Athena Award; the Indiana Correctional Association Judge of the Year; and President Bill Clinton’s Youth Service Award.

Judge Lang has improved our county court by making key changes in staff and support; court procedures; the criminal court system; and the use and availability of technology.
Staff and Support:
• Extended work hours;
• Addition of a staff professional paralegal, at no additional cost
to the taxpayers
• Development of team approach for court staff;
• Development of standard court procedures;
• Extensive use of law student interns;
• Use of Senior Judges and a Magistrate to reduce heavy case load.
Court Procedures:
• More efficient procedures for divorce cases;
• Electronic submission of court filings required in many cases;
• Court requirements and procedures easily available on the web
site.
• Standardization of court forms
Criminal Court:
• Development of a Re-Entry court for transition from the Department
of Corrections back to the community;
• All pre-sentence investigations in criminal court cases must include
a face-to-face interview;
• Probation files are on a computerized case management system that
reduces paperwork, increases accuracy and eliminates duplication of work
between court probation departments;
• Financial record keeping has been changed to increase accuracy
and allow for accountability;
• New building for the vocational training program on the Westside;
• Coordination of the Sex Offender Treatment program with other
LaPorte County Courts;
• Expanded use and referral to community resources;
• Use of additional agencies and programs for drug treatment; and
• Related cases in misdemeanor court involving the same offender
are transferred to Superior Court #1 to eliminate duplication and waste
of court resources.
Technology:
• Court web site;
• Electronic court calendar;

• Computers in the courtroom and Judge’s chambers;
